Exercise 1: What are the Levels of Reflection?

There are three different levels of reflection that are needed for both improvement and development.

  1. Instrumental – concerned with the achievement of goals or solutions, for example, improvement in working as a team member.
  2. Consensual – questioning ends as well as means, for example, how has my course on racism made me a better worker?
  3. Critical – challenging assumptions of the prevailing discourse. In this level of reflection, we seek to question the taken for granted assumptions and critically reflect on how the reality of the social world is produced. This makes us open to transformation.

Consider these three levels of reflection. In this virtual office space for mentoring and coaching, which level most closely aligns with your learning goals for improvement or transformation and why? Write a 25 word entry in your journal.
